Helsinki, Finland
It has been the fourth time that the ARTEMIS and ITEA 2 CO-SUMMIT 2011 took place. About 650 participants from industry, academia, public authorities and press attended. An important component of the Co-summit 2011 was the exhibition of the projects emanating from the ARTEMIS calls of 2008, 2009 and 2010 – 35 in all – ranging from large-scale consortia to the smaller but cross-disciplinary projects. This year's theme for this high level event is: Cross border challenges for clean technologies.
The pan-European character of the ARTEMIS projects is evident in the average number of participating countries (6.72), an essential ingredient to achieving results that address the issues and challenges throughout Europe. In a global world, Embedded Systems are a crucial key enabling technology for Europe’s industrial and societal future which the ARTEMIS projects has been showcasing on the spot. For two days, the Marina Scandic Conference Center in Helsinki seemed to be the global village for all actors in embedded systems.

Cross border challenges for clean technologies
European competitiveness is best stimulated by cross border cooperative R&D. To demontrate that cross border cooperation was and is key to clean technologies ITEA and ARTEMIS showcased a focus area at the exhibition of projects contributing explicitly to clean technologies. In line with the European Commission's definition in the LIFE Directive, clean technology can be understood as "new industrial processes or modification of existing ones intended to reduce the impact of production activities on the environment, including reducing the use of energy and raw materials".
